How the watch time calculator works
Total watch time is simply views multiplied by the average time each viewer spent watching:
Watch time (minutes) = Views × Average view duration (minutes)
Watch time (hours) = Watch time (minutes) ÷ 60
Watch time (hours) = Watch time (minutes) ÷ 60
Step-by-step guide
- Enter your total view count for the period you're checking.
- Enter the average view duration in minutes and seconds (found in YouTube Studio analytics).
- Read total watch time in hours, and progress toward the 4,000-hour YouTube Partner Program threshold.
Why watch time matters beyond monetization
YouTube's recommendation algorithm weighs watch time heavily when deciding what to surface — videos that hold attention longer tend to get more organic recommendation traffic, independent of the monetization threshold itself.
