GCF: the largest number that divides evenly into both
Greatest Common Factor (also called HCF, Highest Common Factor) is the largest number that divides two or more numbers with no remainder. It's genuinely useful for simplifying fractions to their lowest terms, or splitting items into the largest possible equal groups.
LCM: the smallest number both divide into
Least Common Multiple is the smallest number that both (or all) of your numbers divide into evenly. It comes up constantly when adding or subtracting fractions with different denominators — you need a common denominator, and the LCM gives you the smallest one, keeping the numbers manageable.
A quick way to tell them apart
GCF numbers are always smaller than or equal to your smallest input; LCM numbers are always larger than or equal to your largest input. If your answer doesn't fit that pattern, you've likely mixed up which one you calculated.
A real example of each
Planning to arrange 18 chairs and 24 tables into identical groups with nothing left over? That's a GCF problem — the GCF of 18 and 24 is 6, so six identical groups is the largest possible split. Need to know when two events that repeat every 4 days and every 6 days will next coincide? That's LCM — the LCM of 4 and 6 is 12, so they'll align again in 12 days.
